Different things could cause the differential to produce a whining sound. Some may be faulty mechanical repairs or using the wrong lubricant speciality or type, among other issues, making the vehicle sound quite different on acceleration or deceleration.
What causes differential damage?
Using an inappropriate lubricant, water, or mechanical problems might damage your differentials. A wrong fluid, especially lubricants, might result in overheating, poor lubrication, and sometimes transmission failure. On the other hand, water could as well cause differential failure when it sips in through the seals or vents. Driving in high water is among the primary causes of this problem on your vehicle.
When the differential becomes faulty, you will realize changes in the normal functioning of your car. Sometimes you would experience difficulty steering or hear a loud differential noise from the front or rear differential. Such noises may include howling, clunking or gear grinding. Other times, you would also experience differential damage because of extensive wear and tear on your tires.
Does differential affect speed?
The primary purpose of a front or rear differential is to convert the engine’s rotational energy from one axis to another. Further, they allow the multiplication of the engine’s torque when reducing the vehicle’s rotational speed. The differential, therefore, enables vehicle speed adjustment through the wheels.
When the outer wheel travels, it is supposed to cover a longer distance than the inner wheel. Therefore, the outer wheel should move faster than the inner wheel for proper handling. This movement allows the inner wheel to cover a longer distance simultaneously through the differential.
How do you know if a differential is good?
You would know whether you have a faulty differential when you keep losing handling or control when driving. Sometimes, you would notice the vehicle pulling to one side forcefully. Other times the car might feel loose, especially when turning corners. Moreover, your acceleration might feel sluggish despite constant acceleration. These acceleration issues could be related to wheel alignment issues which link back to a faulty differential.
Is differential important to a car?
Each component of your vehicle serves a crucial function in the regular operation of the car. In this case, the differential helps apply a rotational force to the drive wheels. Whether your car is a front, rear, or all-wheel drive, the differential is essential in moving the car forward or backwards.
Suppose vehicles never had differentials; all the wheels would rotate at the same speed. This simultaneous movement will cause the vehicle to cover a similar distance which results in inefficiency in the car movement. Ideally, the rear wheel helps push the front wheels forward through the differential rotation.
